A few thoughts that have been on my mind today regarding sharing files between iPads...
My school has a class set of iPads for children to use on a bookable basis - this means that each iPad could be used by any pupil in school.
At the moment, to share files with the children I upload them to the class' group on Edmodo and then they can be accessed via that group's public page. This has worked well for the past two years but recently an annoying splash screen has started appearing prompting children to choose between a 'Mobile' view or a 'Full web version' - if the 'Mobile' view is incorrectly tapped then the only way to view the public page is if the device is fully re-started which is a nuisance. For this reason, I have been trialling getting some children to login to Edmodo via its dedicated app and accessing files from there - this seems to be working well and I am contemplating doing this in September. The two reasons why I like sharing via Edmodo are that children can then access resources at home easily and that Edmodo allows you to share links to websites unlike all other cloud storage solutions (yes QR codes are a workaround but they require printing out which is an extra job).
Getting files off the iPads is now where my issue lies -
At the moment, I manually go through each iPad after a lesson and email work off the devices (I found that getting 30 children to do this themselves at once at the end of a lesson caused the email server to reject outgoing messages because it flagged them as spam). This method works well and it means that I can check work before it comes off the device, although admittedly it does take time.
For this reason, I've been contemplating doing something different although I can't decide if I really should:
- Setting each lesson as an assignment on Edmodo and getting children to open files in its app at the end of a lesson could work but sadly Edmodo doesn't support .pages.zip or .keynote.zip files which are produced by Pages or Keynote.
- Asking children to share their work into a folder in the Dropbox or Google Drive apps would mean that I could go through work by just accessing the folder on one device although I would still need to download each file to open it up to check it and that each individual file would then need manually deleting from the online folder, my PC/iPad and each individual iPad it was created on.
When children do work over several lessons, I currently ask them to simply remember the number of the iPad they were working on so they can return to it. To speed this process up I also try to ensure that I distribute the devices in order during such lessons (e.g. no.s 1-3 on the first table, no.s 4-6 on the second table etc.). Going back to their same iPad also means that any images will still be in the camera roll that they need and any work done in other apps will still be there if they need to return to it to edit it too (e.g. a painting done in Drawing Pad to insert into a Pages document).
What do you think is the best solution? What works well in your school?
